Running on Ice and Dogs

Run Fat Boy Run

- Monday and Friday, shorter distance and quicker speed with one session focused on interval training i.e. 3 mins faster pace, 3 mins easier pace;
- Wednesday intermediate distance normal pace;
- Saturday, cross training day such as cycling or swimming; and
- Sunday longer run 2hours plus, building up the distance and length between now and race day
- Stick to training 35 hours maximum a week (Paula Radcliffe does 90 miles a week - nutter!)
- Roughly 20k times on each foot when running a marathon
- Force equates to >2 times body weight - I'd better lose weight then ...
- Marathon running is destructive - gosh, what have I done?!
- Too much mileage too soon in training is problematic - I'll be okay then, as I've barely started my training programme.
- Many people's bodies aren't set up for such abuse ...

So it begins ....

So here I am with just over 20 weeks to go until the big day, with hours of training ahead to get me ready to run 26.2 miles. It's a very long way to run. It's a daunting prospect given:
- Running is not my favourite exercise
- I am not built for endurance running
- I would much prefer to go out socialising and drinking
- I am likely to turn into 'grumperella' with the amount of training
- I am still haunted from my younger days with a then coach shouting 'come on thunder thighs' when running
So why am I doing it? A sense of achievement, a challenge, an end goal, something to strive toward and of course to help raise much needed funds for charity. I've chosen two to benefit - Marie Curie and Ovarian Cancer Action - who both do great work. Hopefully, if you do track my training through this blog you will be so moved by my effort, hard work and commitment, and who knows I may just make you smile/laugh that you will donate huge amounts of money to my fundraising page to help me reach my fundraising target of £5,000.
Training has so far consisted of setting up my fundraising page, creating a few videos on You Tube of me doing the 'running man' dance (that's another story), building this blog and coming up with a plan to help me raise £5,000. But once I've sorted this all out, I will be aiming to run between 20 and 30 miles a week throughout the winter, in the cold and dark, and probably the wet. Seriously it's a challenge I'm looking forward to and I'm sure I will have fun along the way as well as some pain and tears! And you can share in the excitement as I will regularly maintain this blog (at least once a month) with updates on my training, fundraising, thoughts, tales and rants about the world.
So please stay tuned .....
